How to Let Go of Life's Little Snarls

By Sandy Schroeder

We all tend to hang on to little things that bug us, conflicts, complaints, doubts, fears, and big and little disasters that happen in the daily swirl, but the sooner we let go the better off we are.

Deep down, we all know this, but it usually takes practice to really make it happen. And when we do actually let go, life gets a lot better.

Here are some tips from dumblittleman.com on how to really let go.

Accept things as they are – When we pause long enough to see what is really going on, everything becomes calmer and clearer. Often the things we are upset about really are minor, and can be shelved as we move on.

Believe in yourself and others – When life’s little snarls won’t let go, think about how much you really have. Reach out to your friends and family to get centered, and remember how much they all do for you all of the time.

Pause to take a breath – When we get steamed up over little things, stepping away may be the only really good answer. Close your door, or step outside to find a quiet spot to just sit and breathe. You may just take five minutes to collect yourself, or you may use your breath or another meditation to ease the tension. When  you feel calm, everything may look much different.

Think about the bottom line – If we really think about it, most of the little things that happen every day are not worth the trouble. Most of us know someone who always seems to be able to take the high road. I worked with an amazing boss who could always see beyond the immediate struggles. He would smile, nod, and then make some incredibly funny observation that would lighten the moment, and keep us all committed.

Knowing how much we have can help keep us balanced to calmly deal with daily ups and downs. The next time you find yourself becoming annoyed, ask yourself what else you could be doing. This may be the perfect time to opt out, have coffee with a friend, take the afternoon off, or take an early lunch. Making the choice to let the immediate hassles go usually works out for the best.

When calmness returns, you might make a list of what to do when you feel annoyed again. I have worked with people who always knew how to laugh it off. Others usually found a way to step away. Think about what you could do to prevent little issues from becoming bigger ones. That usually helps to level things out for everyone.
