Tips for Beginners: Making the Running Habit Stick

By Genevieve Cunningham

So you've decided to run. Awesome. Running is a great way to get fit and change your health for the better. But let's face reality: Unless you're already into running, this is an exercise habit that is hard to keep. Luckily, it's also possible as long as you know where to begin. If you're ready to make running a constant in your life, take a look at these tips to help you find success.

Don’t Overdo It

Most people, especially on their first day, run too much. They think that their abilities are greater than reality. And even if you can technically finish that mile, it doesn't mean you should do it. Running too much too fast ultimately leads to excessive soreness, faster burnout, and an increased risk of giving it up. Start slow … very slow, and it will be easier to maintain the habit.

Watch the Weather

Don't start a running routine in the dead of winter or the middle of summer. If you have a comfortable gym or workout space, go for it. But if you're running outside, this is one of the fastest ways to failure. Instead, watch the weather and make a plan. Choose a starting time that coincides with days and days of pleasant weather. You're much more likely to stick with it if the climate isn't going to make your body horribly uncomfortable from the get-go.

Prepare Yourself

It may seem like you can just step outside and start running, but getting prepared is a much better plan of action. Before you ever pound even one foot on the pavement, spend a few days just stretching. After a while, stretch and then walk. Then finally pick up the pace into a jog. You should also make sure that you have proper footwear, a running route, water, adequate clothing, and a motivating playlist. The more prepared you are, the more successful each outing will be, and the more likely the habit is to stick.

Running is an excellent way to get in shape, lose weight, or just feel better about your health. It's low cost, challenging, and still incredibly effective. But it can definitely be tough to keep it up. Use these tips to give you a headstart, and watch your body and health improve in no time.
