Don't Ignore These Symptoms After a Car Accident

By Sara Butler

When you’re in a motor vehicle accident you may walk away with what you think is a roughed up car, only to discover later that you actually are injured. Most people suffer whiplash injuries to their neck and upper back in a car accident, but that’s not all that can happen. If you’re in a motor vehicle accident, here are a few symptoms you shouldn’t ignore. Make sure to come see the chiropractors at The Joint right away if you experience them.

Shoulder Discomfort or Pain

If you were hit from the side, then your body may have been pushed to one side and you may have hit the window. You may notice a bruise form but you also need to pay special attention to how the shoulder joint itself feels. A significant and sudden impact to the shoulder, such as those that occur in a car accident, can impact the way the joint works, which can then lead to pain and long-term problems with the joint too. Visit your chiropractor at The Joint and allow them to assess your injuries and make any adjustments you may need to help you recover.

Hip Discomfort

Pain in the area of the hip is also common after a car accident. This is definitely pain you shouldn’t ignore. If your pelvis twisted upon impact, then it can lead to a variety of problems. Your gait may have been impacted and that can lead to problems with your lower back after a short time. A tilted pelvis can also cause one foot to be higher than the other, which can then lead to knee pain. If you notice any pain in your hips or knees, make sure to see the chiropractor as soon as you can.

Ankle Discomfort

A car accident can cause damage to one or both of your ankles. Perhaps you slammed your foot down on the brake in order to try to avoid impact. The shockwave produced from that action can travel up your foot and into your ankle or lower leg. If you’ve been in a car accident and feel as if your ankle is sore, then make sure to see a chiropractor. Limping to try to keep weight off the injury can strain other parts of your body, including your back.

The truth is that even if you don’t feel injured, you should be assessed by a chiropractor after a car accident just to make sure something isn’t brewing under the surface.
