How to Make Every Day Your Best Effort
By Sandy Schroeder
Attitude goes a long way. Usually not all the way, but long enough that we really should put positive approaches to work whenever we can.
I had a boss who directed a vibrant health center staffed with scientists and MDs. He had many challenges, but I never heard him complain, whine or offer excuses. When there was a reversal he would simply shake his head, smile and roll up his sleeves, ready to head back into the fray.
Using a Positive Attitude to Move Ahead
Here are some of the things that make a positive attitude work.
Confidence – Start slowly with your normal projects and figure out how you are making them work. It could be your background, experience, knowledge in the field, or other skills that make it work, but knowing what those assets are will give you more confidence as you tackle new projects.
Persistence – Nobody scores a hit every time. When you have to fix an error or redo a project, just go ahead and do it, but learn why it flopped, and figure out how to do it better.
Alertness – Pay attention to anticipate future issues, and note what is really working will give you a strong base for future efforts. The real pros that I have worked with were always about six steps ahead of everybody else.
Determination – The people that I have known who have done amazing things in their jobs usually had an incredible amount of determination. They were never too tired to stay late, come in early, or work harder when challenges came up. That strong focus made a lot of great things happen. Everyone knew they could count on them to keep showing up and they responded with equal support.
Sense of humor – At the end of the day when everything that could go wrong did, you've got to be able to laugh or you simply won’t make it for the long haul. We have all seen projects that should have succeeded suddenly go sideways, while other projects that were iffy actually made it. Hanging onto your sense of humor will give you the balance to keep right on going, and you will have some great stories, too.
A ready smile – The people who can summon a smile in spite of everything after a difficult day are the ones who usually get the most support from their co-workers. Instead of snapping at everyone, or looking for someone to blame, they know how to grin and bear it, and that counts the most for most folks.
