5 Tips for Improving Your Eating Habits

By Brandi Swieter

Too many people have poor eating habits that lead to weight gain, little motivation to exercise, feelings of bloat, and an otherwise unhealthy lifestyle. Eating habits need to change now if people are going to stay in shape and keep up with healthier choices throughout their lifetime. With these five tips for improving eating habits, individuals looking to start their healthy food journey can get some help in doing so.

Eat Before Leaving the House

People are much more likely to choose healthy options at home than if they were to go out and see a menu full of delicious choices. It’s best to eat before leaving the house, ensuring the belly gets filled with nutritious choices and there is no need to stop and eat somewhere unhealthy on the way to the destination. This is also true for those attending parties or other events. Eat before leaving and it won’t have people greedily grabbing food at the party and chowing down on less than ideal snacks.

Buy a Healthy Recipe Book

Many traditional recipe books offer guidance on how to make meals, but they do not include the calorie count. Buying a healthy recipe book ensures only healthy options are provided, and the calorie count and important nutrition information is included. People may even find it best to get a few healthy books and toss out any old ones they may have.

Pack a Lunch and Snacks for Work

Workers often go out to lunch or purchase foods available on the job site. They may even find themselves getting unhealthy snacks out of the vending machine throughout the day. Not only is this more costly on the budget, but it also is unhealthy. Most of these choices are not healthy options. It’s better to pack a lunch and any necessary snacks for work while at home and making nutritious choices.

Bring a Water Bottle Everywhere

Calories are not only consumed in food. Drinks contain calories too. Soda pop has far too much sugar and high calories per serving, so it should really be avoided. Bring a water bottle everywhere so that if you get thirsty there’s already a drink available to you -- perhaps in your hand! It prevents people from buying unnecessary sugary beverages their bodies don’t need.

Put Snacks on a Plate

Bags and boxes of snacks are easy to transport, so people often bring them along to the couch while they sit and binge watch TV. This can lead to overeating since the entire package is at their fingertips. The healthier option is to put some snacks on a plate or in a bowl so only those available get consumed.

Eating habits can be changed over time, and require a gradual process before the change happens. Try out a few of these tips and improve the way you eat in the future for a healthier you.
