How to Protect Your Skin in Winter

By Genevieve Cunningham

The skin is our body's largest organ. It takes the most direct hit from the elements, is often the first thing that people notice, and is sometimes a challenge to keep clear. And yet, even with our preoccupation with beauty, we often don't give our skin the proper attention. And this is especially true in the winter. Because the sun is less direct, it's easy to forget about the skin. In order to protect your skin and its health long-term, take a look at these tips for healthy skin all winter long.

Moisturize Even More

You have heard plenty about moisturizing the skin. We all have! But amazingly, many still don't take this aspect of skin care seriously. The winter can be especially drying to the skin, leaving it chalky, cracked, and at risk for developing wrinkles. Make sure that moisturizer is a part of your everyday routine. Apply in the morning, and then reapply multiple times a day.

Still Use Sunscreen

It's too easy to forget sunscreen in the winter. It's easy to forget any time of year, but the winter is especially difficult. Because it's not hot out, and because we don't feel the sun as strongly as the summer months, we don't make it priority. But the effects of sun exposure still occur in the winter. Along with moisturizer, apply sunscreen daily. It's one of the most important and effective ways to protect and prolong your skin’s health.

See a Dermatologist

This is an important tip no matter the time of year. One of the best ways to protect your skin (or your health in general!) is by getting care from a professional. A dermatologist can check your skin for problem areas, and can then give you advice for how to protect it. They'll know skin-specific tips that will work for your skin type, and they may be able to guide you toward the right products for ultimate self care. Prevention is the best medicine, and seeing a doctor definitely falls into this category.

The skin needs and deserves special attention. If you want it to last, you have to take care of it. Summer, winter, spring, and fall ... your skin will need your attention in order to thrive. Use these tips to get started, and enjoy healthy skin for a lifetime.
