Collagen and Joint Health
By Donna Kostiew
My daughter has been battling with severe arthritis for the past five years and will more than likely continue doing so for the rest of her life. She struggles with pain on a daily basis, and although some days are better than others, it isn’t a lot of fun to think about what her life will be like in the future. You see, she’s just 18. And she has a lot of life left. So, just as any parent would do, I have spent countless amounts of hours researching treatments for pain relief, and while on this hunt searching for answers to get her healthy, I was surprised to read about collagen.
Collagen … Isn’t That Just for Great Skin and Nails?
Yes and no! Research has shown that collagen demonstrates a positive effect on pain and mobility in osteoarthritic patients. So, no matter what your age, or your athletic level, your pain could be reduced by adding collagen to your diet. And since we all have a lot of life to live still, let’s try to live with as little pain as possible!
What Exactly is Collagen?
Collagen is a protein in the body and is necessary to support the elasticity of joints and skin. It is necessary for restoring joint health and reducing inflammation and is often referred to as the “glue” that holds the body together.
There are many factors that will predispose a person to osteoarthritis -- obesity, injury, overuse, aging -- so it is wise to supplement your diet with collagen.
Foods that Contain Collagen
Collagen has several different sources, but there are also other food items that will help to protect it or enhance its production. Here is a list of excellent choices to add to your diet.
- Bone broth
- Avocado
- Cantaloupe
- Leafy greens
- Almonds
- Olives
- Salmon
- Red meat
- Poultry
- Animal bones
- Gelatin
- Soy
- Red fruits and vegetables
- Eggs
- Supplements

When it comes to arthritis and joint pain, your life can be disrupted beyond measure. Daily activities can lead to hours of recovery. So be proactive with the health of your joints and try to include as many collagen-rich foods or supplements in your diet. It is one of the best things you can do for your joints and your quality of life. And on top of that, you may very well end up with some great hair, skin, and nails too.
