Finding Time to Not be Busy

By Donna Kostiew

It seems that “being too busy” has become the new way to promote ourselves. It’s worn like a badge of honor, for if we can’t say that we are too busy, then we must not be doing things right or we’re not doing enough of those right things. But if we take a step back, are we really that busy or are we simply just distracted with a lot of nonsense?

We often give the “I am too busy” or “there aren’t enough hours in the day” excuses when we aren’t completing the things we need to get done, and unfortunately, some of those things directly impact our health. We need to exercise, we need to work, and we need to sleep. So how do we resolve what we need to do with our busy schedules?

How to Find Some Extra Hours in the Week

Stop the excuses and get things done. Here are some simple solutions on how to find some extra time during your week.

  • Make a schedule – Creating a daily or weekly schedule and sticking to it will help you to stay on task, thereby eliminating a lot of your distractions and saving you time in the long run.
  • Start focusing – And I mean, really focusing on what you are doing and what needs to be done … and drop those bad habits! If you have trouble multitasking, don’t. If you find yourself procrastinating a lot, be intentional to not. By setting some boundaries and staying focused, you will be able to get your work done a lot quicker, giving you more time in your day.
  • Limit TV time – Have you ever caught yourself saying “Ugh! How could they end it like that? Just one more episode …” Hours upon hours can be wasted getting caught up in a television show. So if you can, limit your TV time, and if you really can’t help yourself, use that time wisely to get some exercise in as well.
  • Grocery shop online – Online grocery shopping is becoming more popular than ever, even with some local grocery stores. Skip the aisles, the lines, and the aimless wandering and grab your laptop, place your order, and select the time you want to pick it up. It’s easy and so convenient. And it could save you a couple of hours.
  • Quit social media – If not completely, quit social media for a certain amount of time each day. Do you find that the times you are on Facebook each day could add up to a couple of hours? Try to reduce your time on social media by 20 to 30 minutes each day, and if you are successful in doing so, continue to take time off each week. You may be surprised at how much extra time you can find once you start doing that.

Ideally, if it’s important, you will find the time to do it right? Easier said than done, but with the suggestions above, you may be able to find some time to not be so busy.
