Go Back to Basic Foods for Your Health

By Tom Herrin

Improving a diet may be easier than many people think.  Many of the foods that could be included to make the greatest impact may be found in some area of a market other than the exotic foods section.  People so often overlook the obvious because they feel that really healthy foods should be expensive and unique.  In the case of apples, people may still “keep the doctor away” for a small price with a great variety of options.

They May Help in Daily Maintenance

Apples are commonly known for their properties that help with managing bowel regularity.  They are high in fiber and have a large water content.  They are also believed to be good for weight control.  They are filling and, if eaten prior to eating other foods, have shown in studies to speed up metabolism so that those foods may not be retained in the body.  They are a good food to eat when needing to help keep teeth and gums in better condition.

They May Help Prevent Heart Disease

Apples seem to help to clean arteries in the body by removing unwanted materials.  They can also help to prevent, or slow, oxidation of fats and neutralizes the effects of some triglycerides.  This can help to prevent some forms of disease that affects the heart and circulatory system.

They May Help in Controlling Diabetes

Eating apples may help to interrupt the absorption and use of carbohydrates.  These are commonly turned into the sugars that contribute to high blood sugar content.  Try packing an apple or two in your lunch or snack.  They are so easily stored and popular with kids.

They Don’t Have to Be Plain

My family loves apples as a treat.  We often mix peanut butter, uncooked oatmeal, and honey together as a sort of dip or spread.  With sliced apples, they are a great treat, and everyone who comes in seems to enjoy them.  I have always enjoyed baked apples, and with the availability of microwaves, I can cut them, add cinnamon and a little sugar, and toss them in.  Apples are so versatile that you can experiment and come up with all kinds of ways to eat them.  Be as creative as you would like.  You can easily personalize them in a way that works for your family.  They are sure to be a healthy hit.
