Creating Healthy Desserts to Enjoy
By Brandi Swieter
Dessert is a popular notion for many people, with delicious baked goods often topping the menu for this after-mealtime treat. Not many dessert options are healthy, however, because they provide more sugar and butter than people need. By creating some healthy desserts to enjoy, more people can partake in the pastime and satisfy their sweet-tooth cravings guilt-free.
Make Substitutions
If a person isn’t big on healthy food options, they can still make their desserts less fattening by making just a few substitutions. It will lower the amount of sugar and number of calories in the dish, making it more bearable to have on the menu. Organic honey and maple syrup can both be substituted for sugar to still get the sweet affect without being too unhealthy.
Focus on Fruit
Cakes, cookies, pies, and more make the dessert list, often made with doughs and breads that are far too fattening. Desserts should focus on fruit as often as possible, giving a sweet taste without adding too many calories. Apples dipped in peanut butter are an easy treat. To make it a bit more dessert-like, try stuffed apples instead. Carve out the core and fill them with peanut butter, then bake to perfection. You can even drizzle on some chocolate for added flavor.
Just Add Chocolate
To continue on the fruit fix, chocolate is a great addition to many kinds. You don’t have to use a bunch of ingredients or find substitutions to create a healthy dessert. Simply take some fruit, such as strawberries, bananas, or blueberries, and top it with melted chocolate. It makes an easy option that is oh so delicious.
Use Bananas for Ice Cream
Ice cream is a popular dessert option that many enjoy. With bananas in place of some other ingredients, people can still enjoy the choice without having to feel guilty. Literally all you have to do is place some bananas in the food processor and blend it up, and it creates a banana ice cream to enjoy. For different flavors, add a bit of cocoa or peanut butter as well.
Dessert doesn’t have to be fattening and full of sugar. By creating some healthy options, more people can enjoy dessert when they want. Eating healthy and clean is best for the mind and body, and dessert shouldn’t be an exception.
