Keeping Fitness Resolutions After Valentine's Day

By Brandi Swieter

It was less than two months ago that numerous people vowed to stay fit throughout the year. With Valentine’s Day past, many people have been thinking about all the chocolates they still have to eat. With winter still present and previous holidays not so long ago, the month of February has many people still in a slump. It makes it easy to forget the resolutions made just a short time ago. By making a few conscious decisions, people can stick to their goals and add more fitness to their month.

Work Out With a Partner

Working out alone isn’t always easy, especially when people would rather by laying around with nothing to do. The motivation isn’t always there after Valentine’s Day hits, since so many people have desserts and candies to still devour. Planning a workout with a partner is a great way to get some motivation back into things. A couple can get in some fitness time together for a bonding experience that helps them both get the exercise they need after this candy-inspired holiday.

Discuss Fitness Goals With Your Partner

Discussing fitness goals is a great way to stay motivated to stick with them. If someone with a resolution for fitness talks about that resolution with their partner, they’re more likely to want to do their best to stick to it. They know they have someone else who knows about their plans and might hold them accountable, so it makes it easier to maintain the momentum. The partner may even be willing to work out with their significant other more if they know what’s at stake, helping them to stay even more motivated.

Set a Small Daily Goal

Rather than deciding to do 30 workouts per month, set a smaller daily goal that is more manageable. While a person may be able to get in a good workout at the gym many times that month, it’s easier to say they’ll at least attempt to do some exercise each day any way they can. This may mean walking to work instead of driving, jogging up the stairs instead of walking, or even dancing in the shower (but not slipping) at the end of the day to get the body moving in some way.

The holidays can make it difficult to stay fit, and that includes Valentine’s Day. Too many people made dinner and movie plans for the day, consuming a high amount of calories. They also may have received candy and other treats from loved ones, giving them a lot of junk food to eat over the next few weeks. With this in mind, people with fitness resolutions need to do their best to stick with them and get in some good workouts throughout the week to work off the calories consumed during the month.
