Berries Are Recognized for Antioxidant Content

By Tom Herrin

In the search for foods that can promote good health, people may have to sift through an abundance of ideas and information.  At one time, meat and potatoes were considered to be the foods that kept people going the best.  While that may have provided protein and carbs, everything we know of today would be out the window with such thinking.  Most of us recognize the need to have color in our diets.  Green and yellow vegetables have a lot of value.  As far as fruits go, berries may be at the top of the list for many of their helpful properties.

Their Fiber Content Is High

Berries come in a large number of varieties.  That means a variety of flavors.  It also means a variety of available nutrients.  Most berries are high in fiber.  This has been proven to be a great help in maintaining overall better health.  Fiber can help people in digesting their foods.  It can help give them a feeling of fullness as well.

They Can Help Fight Diseases

The saying that people are what they eat still has a lot of meaning.  The antioxidant properties of berries can help in preventing, or even fighting, many kinds of disease.  They have a proven record of boosting resistance to communicable diseases.  For many, their real value may be their ability to help reduce the risk of some cancers, especially of the mouth, esophagus, breast, and colon.  They certainly seem to be a case of more bang for the buck when looking for something that can be an investment as a part of a daily diet.

They Can Be a Delicious Food

My family truly enjoys berries because they taste good.  They can be great with yogurt, cereal, or many other foods, as a breakfast.  They are good with milk or cream.  They are tasty when added to a dessert such as puddings or cakes.  My wife makes a strawberry cake that is quite popular with family and friends.  As always, berries are wonderful in pies or cobblers.  The bottom line on berries is that they are a super multipurpose food.  That is, they have a lot of flavor while doing plenty of good things for our health.  If you haven’t already done so, do a little shopping and try them out on your family.  They may be the best judge of success.
