Skincare: Make These Habits Part of Your Routine

By Virginia Laird

With the weather beginning to warm up, many have already begun spending more time outdoors. Although skincare should be part of everyone’s routine all year long, this is the time most start to think about protecting skin from the effects of the sun. Dermatologists offer a variety of things to help protect your skin from damage, including:

  • Apply sunscreen regularly
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Wear a hat while outdoors
  • Wear long sleeves when spending time outside

Apply Sunscreen Regularly

If there is only room for you to add one thing to your routine, applying sunscreen routinely is the one to add. This can protect from burns as well as harmful UV rays. Too much sun exposure can cause the skin to age more rapidly than most would like. To help you remember to apply sunscreen often, make sure to keep a bottle in your car, purse, and in your home.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is vital in keeping the skin healthy. When properly hydrated, the skin appears young and vibrant. Where there is a lack of hydration, wrinkles tend to appear and the skin loses some elasticity. It is recommended that everyone consume at least half of their body weight in ounces daily.

Wear a Hat While Outdoors

As you try to protect your skin from sun damage, dermatologists advise investing in a good hat. While it is recommended for best protection to wear a wide brimmed hat, any that provides protection for the face will suffice. Wearing a hat outdoors can help keep the appearance of wrinkles on the face and neck limited. If you do not have a hat you love, consider investing in one right away.

Wear Long Sleeves When Spending Time Outside

Many skincare professionals advise wearing long sleeves when outdoors to protect from sun damage. Although the temperatures are getting hot, there are a variety of long sleeved shirts which offer protection from the sun without being too hot.

As the weather continues to grow warmer, it is increasingly important to have a plan in place to protect your skin from damage. Although many of these tips can seem burdensome, keep in mind skin damage caused by the sun is irreversible. Start protecting your skin today!
