Jumping Rope is Not Just for Kids
By Tom Herrin
No matter how hard people try, they sometimes end up reverting to childhood activities in order to achieve improvement in their overall health. Part of this may because of the fact that many of the activities children are involved in when they are young are actually low stress in that they do not require heavy lifting or high-intensity workouts. This allows many of these people to be more flexible and move as they were designed to move. Jumping rope may sound like a lot of work, but it can be done at a pace that is comfortable and yet productive.
It Is Great for Coordination
When many people think of jumping rope, improving coordination immediately comes to mind. Rhythm is another thought. Those boxers in training always seemed to engage in pretty regular rope jumping. There is a great deal to be gained in coordination from doing this. Once a person gets the rope in a position that is comfortable for them, the steady jumping, or skipping, can come somewhat natural. The key is to take it a pace that is steady and manageable. Speed is not so critical for the beginner. Achieving success is the primary goal.
It Can Be Great for Cardio
Without a doubt, jumping rope is an aerobic exercise, meaning that it requires steady breathing more than heavy intensity. Participating in this daily for as few as 15 minutes or so can improve the body’s ability to supply oxygen for steady use. Jumping at a pace so that someone can still talk while doing so can accomplish their purpose. The participant can likely notice improvement in only a few days or weeks.
It is Portable and Inexpensive
There may be no activity that is more affordable than jumping rope. It simply requires purchasing a rope that is of reasonable quality. It may be done with or without shoes, so that is not a major factor either. Most ropes can be carried easily in a purse, lightweight backpack, or any other small container. They weigh almost nothing. If you are giving thought to finding a new activity that can burn calories and improve your condition, think about buying a jump rope. You can probably find one at a local dollar store. It may be just the right fit for your busy schedule and can be increased as you feel like it.
