Don't Skip the Workout, Just the Rope
By Tom Herrin
When trying to find the right thing for a new workout, there are plenty of things to choose from. All exercise does not have to be heavy, but it does need to be consistent. Doing something that trains the body and tests endurance, even slightly, can make a world of difference in overall conditioning. An old standard is jumping rope. It is simple and requires little expertise or special training, and almost anyone can do it regardless of their current level of conditioning.
It Can Strengthen Bones
Bone density is a big concern for a lot of people today, and many suffer serious problems for lack of it. Part of this may be due to a lack of exercise or poor diet. Jumping rope can counter this problem. Even though it may seem a little strange, jumping is considered to be one of the best ways to strengthen bones. The repetition of jumping when doing so with a rope can help ensure that this activity is regular.
It Can Be a Good Way to Condition
Getting a cardio workout is especially important. Many people simply don’t get enough of it. When the heart is worked, the blood flow to the rest of the body is improved. This means that cells all over receive more needed oxygen. When people get out of breath, it is a way that their body tries to catch up. Jumping rope can provide an opportunity for the heart and circulatory system to get needed work. This can make all of it more efficient. Since people can set their own pace as they jump rope, they can increase as their body is able to handle it.
It Can Go with a Busy Schedule
Jumping rope is a low cost activity. There is no special equipment needed. You don’t even have to wear shoes. All you need is a rope. You can buy a good one for only a few dollars -- or maybe at the local dollar store. It just needs to be substantial enough to do what you need. It can usually fit in a purse, backpack, or other carrying device. You can use it in the house, outside, at lunch at work, or pretty much any place you can think of. Once you start, you will likely find yourself making progress in no time.
