Focus on Nutrition During the Spring

By Brandi Swieter

March is National Nutrition Month, a time devoted to teaching people about the importance of eating the right foods and using diet to improve health. Not just any foods should be put into the body. Only the most nutritional options should get consumed regularly for a healthy body and mind. Go further with food this spring by meal prepping, starting the day with breakfast, avoiding food waste, and fueling up before activities.

Meal Prepping

Rather than grabbing unhealthy fast food on the way home or snacking on things in the cupboard, people should do their best to meal prep for the week so they know they have a healthy choice waiting for them. Many people choose Sunday as their meal prep day so they can get all meals for the week cooked and ready to go before they head back to work the next day.

Eating Breakfast

People will not have the fuel and energy they need to make it through the day without eating breakfast. Most people have heard the saying about breakfast being the most important meal of the day. Doctors, scientists, and other medical professionals say this because it’s the honest truth. The body has been asleep and needs to get energized and started up for the day with the help of something healthy. Skip the syrup-covered waffles and opt for plain yogurt or oatmeal mixed with fruit instead.

Reduce Food Waste

Too much healthy food gets wasted rather than consumed. Every person should do their best to help reduce food waste so they can make their food go further during the week. Fruits and vegetables often end up tossed into the trash once they’ve become too soft and bruised to consume. This leaves people resorting to unhealthy options that haven’t gone bad in their pantries. When there are leftover vegetables or meat from a dinner, put them in the refrigerator and use them in another meal the next day. This helps to reduce food waste and makes your food, and money, go further.

Fuel Your Body Before Exercise

Exercise takes a toll on the body. Failing to fuel up beforehand can result in even more damage, as people do not have enough nourishment to keep their bodies strong. The workout won’t be as beneficial to the body if it can’t be done in its entirety. Potassium, protein, and fiber are great fuel for a pre-workout, so be sure to consume foods rich in these nutrients to make the most of the activity.

Start putting more focus on your nutrition in the spring months and continue the journey throughout the year. People should do their best to incorporate healthier foods into their diet on a regular basis if they want to experience better health and well-being.
