End Exercise Excuses Forever!
By Sara Butler
Feel like you’re too busy to exercise? Or maybe you find exercise boring. If these excuses sound familiar, you’re not alone. Many adults don’t get the amount of physical activity recommended because there are a ton of excuses out there not to do it. Here are some of the most common exercise excuses and how to overcome them for your health and wellness!
You Hate to Exercise
Believe it or not, exercise can be an enjoyable activity! The key is to find something that you have an interest in and work to become good at it. Realize that at first, every activity is going to be challenging, but if you persist, then you can learn to enjoy it. Try to choose an activity that fits into your lifestyle and personality, such as:
- Games – There are plenty of interactive video games out there so you can have fun and get fit at once
- Group fitness – If you’re social, then this type of exercise can get you together with people and work you out at the same time.
- Exercise videos – If the gym isn’t your thing, then work out at home with a video or with a piece of exercise equipment.
- Apps – There’s a fitness app for that! Check out what fitness apps are available and try one out.
You Can’t Make Exercise Stick
Maybe you’ve tried to give exercise a go but just can’t make it stick. There are a variety of reasons why people quit working out. If you’re one of them, then you may have:
- Done too much too soon – Going from no exercise to intense exercise each day isn’t recommended; in fact, it will burn you out
- Gotten bored – The treadmill (or dreadmill!) or other workout machines may not be a good fit for you if you get bored easily
- Been sore – Soreness is normal when starting a new activity, but if it’s impeding your daily function, then you did too much too soon
- Gotten confused – If you don’t know where to start, then you may lose interest since you don’t have a plan of attack
You can remedy these issues by:
- Finding a trainer – A good trainer can turn the most banal workout into something you enjoy
- Getting some variety – If you do the same thing day in and day out, you’ll get bored; try different types of workouts in order to keep things interesting
- Not skipping workouts – Think about why you want to skip a workout if you’re tempted; you may be able to talk yourself out of skipping it
Forget about excuses! Get out there and exercise for your health and wellness!
