Dust Off the Frisbee for Some Exercise

By Tom Herrin

After being cooped up for the winter months, many people look for an opportunity to get outside and get moving.  There are plenty of ways, but for those who may not be quite ready for heavy workouts, other options can allow them to start slower and enjoy what they do.  Playing a game may be one of the best ways to move around while enjoying the challenge of playing. Disc golf, sometime called Frisbee golf, can be a great way to become acclimated to outdoor activity while finding some enjoyment at the same time.

It Can Help Develop Confidence

Anytime people have the opportunity to practice anything and see improvement in their skills, they are sure to gain a better feeling about their abilities.  This can carry over to many other facets of their lives. When people gain confidence, they will feel better about themselves. They will be more willing to try new things.  They are often more successful at what they do. Even social relations may improve as people feel they have the approval of others.

It May Challenge the Mind

Modern research has shown that people need more mental activity in order to maintain alertness and mental function.  With dementia appearing in more people today, finding activities that can be more mentally challenging is a priority for many people who have such concerns.  Calculating factors such as wind, obstacles, and distance can all be good tests of mental performance for anyone. Applying these thinking skills in combination with physical practices may be insurance against mental decline.

It Can Provide Good Activity

We all need exercise.  With the abundance of sedentary jobs around today, it is easy to get caught up in complacency.  It often takes a considerable effort to get moving and get needed activity. Disc golf does not require heavy exercise but can be a good way to have more movement.  Even walking the course may mean a mile or more of walking. Add in the tossing of the disc and maneuvering the inclines that may be present. It is an activity that may vary in intensity as some people choose to jog or run for a higher level of competition.  Whichever you prefer, you are sure to get quality exercise while enjoying the game at the same time.
