3 Tips for Making Yoga Your Workout
By Genevieve Cunningham
Yoga is a great workout. Many people really like the thought of being a yogi, but in practice, sometimes it's just not that easy. Yoga is a natural fit for some people, but for others, liking it and sticking with it is a challenge. It's slow and tedious and quiet. If you really want to join the yoga life and make it a regular part of your routine, take a look at these tips for making it work.
Experiment
Though most people have a particular image in their heads about yoga, it's actually a very diverse practice. Just because you've been to one yoga class does not mean that you know everything there is to know. Each form of yoga, though similar in many ways, is quite different and distinct in the way they practice. Want something really challenging? Try hot yoga. Want something steady? Try Ashtanga. Want a spiritual experience? Try kundalini yoga. If you're willing to experiment, you'll be way more likely to find something that suits your personality and lifestyle.
Get Guidance
Though you can definitely search the internet for a video and go at a yoga practice alone, nothing beats a guided practice. You can join a class, or if you’re more of a loner, you can find a private teacher. A teacher helps you find a good flow, adjusts your body to meet proper form, and gives you tips for how to be successful. Find a teacher that you feel comfortable with and who motivates you, and you're much more likely to find long-term success.
Join a Community
Sometimes all it takes is finding a place to belong. Luckily you don't have to join a hippie commune to find a yoga community. Just try out a local yoga studio and find some friends. Look for a place that speaks to your individual style. Each yoga studio gives off a different vibe, and it may take a bit to find the perfect fit. But once you do, sticking with yoga will be a breeze, as a community can make your new practice feel like home.
If you really want to enjoy yoga, but you haven't found your fit yet, don't give up! Use these tips to find something that works for you. With a little experimentation, some patience, and an open mind, you can turn yourself into a yogi and enjoy all the healthy benefits that come with it.
