Spring Activities That Keep the Whole Family Fit

By Brandi Swieter

Once spring finally arrives, many families are more than eager to head outside to enjoy some fresh air. Some may want to get in shape after months of being cooped up and packing on the pounds with large family meals for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even Easter. Plenty of spring activities exist that can help keep the whole family fit and healthy.

Hiking

Taking a long hike with the family is a great way to get in shape while also bonding. It gives everyone a chance to talk as they explore nature and make their way to the destination. Families that choose to go on a hike need to be sure they pack plenty of water to keep themselves hydrated.

Canoeing

Spring weather may not be warm enough for swimming, but families can go canoeing. Since they won’t be touching the water with their bodies, people can use the springtime to go for a family canoeing adventure. They can even keep on their clothes, as there’s no real need for bathing suits. Using the oars or paddles builds up tremendous arm strength. Make this pastime a regular event and each person who rows will be sure to gain some muscle soon.

Bike Riding

Going for a family bike ride provides a great bonding experience. Everyone gets to ride along together, enjoying the wind in their faces. They can even make a pit stop along the way, perhaps enjoying a family picnic before getting back on the bikes again. Make the picnic a healthy one to really reap the benefits. Biking is an ideal fitness workout because it engages many areas of the body.

Mini-Golfing

Miniature golf may not seem like a fitness option, but it actually can be. The act of swinging the club and hitting the ball, as well as walking from hole to hole to complete the course, does get the heart pumping and muscles working a little bit. It’s a more laid back workout that many don’t even realize is helping them.

Families looking to improve their fitness together can do so easily outdoors. The spring weather provides the perfect time to get outside and enjoy a workout, as the weather is neither too hot nor cold. Go for a bike ride, take a hike, go mini-golfing, or even go canoeing for a fun family adventure that leads to bonding and health.
