How to Embrace Getting Older

By Sara Butler

People don’t enjoy getting old. No matter what age you are, you probably still feel 18 inside -- even if the outside looks a little worse for the wear. But you know what they say, if you can’t beat them, then you better join them. That’s why learning to enjoy getting older is important! Here are some tips to help you stay healthy as you put the years behind you.

You Can’t Fight It

Everyone gets older, it’s just one of those inevitable things -- like taxes. Science may have come far, but not so far that it can stop the aging process. And let’s face it, few people have enough money for quality plastic surgery that doesn’t make you look like you’re in a state of constant surprise.

You must think about age as nothing but a number. It’s simply the passing of time. While it may make a difference when it comes to your health since with age comes various health concerns, it’s your lifestyle and not the number of candles on your birthday cake that make the biggest difference.

As you get older, you should endeavor to stay active both physically and mentally, eat well, and see your medical providers (such as your chiropractor!) regularly.

Accept Your Age

Aging is a normal part of life, so you have to just learn to roll with it. Work to build up your self-esteem so that when the judgments that come along with growing older in society land on your shoulders, you can let it roll right off your back. In fact, according to National Institutes of Health, a negative outlook on your age can actually have a negative impact on your memory. If you look at aging as a decline, then that’s exactly what it will be.

What You Can Do

Other than your outlook, there are a number of things you can do to make aging more engaging. You should get regular exercise to help combat the stress and chronic disease that can come with getting older. Work on your flexibility and strength to keep going strong!

It might seem cliché, but you should also eat foods high in fiber and limit foods that are high in fat. Steer clear of refined grains and up your intake of foods high in important vitamins and minerals.

Growing old can be a great thing -- it all depends on how you look at it!
