Hugs May Improve Health for Everyone
By Tom Herrin
It is natural for people to want to show affection to children. A good baby attracts plenty of attention. People naturally want to touch them or hold them. As they get a little older, many people seem to forget that those touches are still important. That child, though they may not want to show it, is every bit as much affected by a good hug. It may actually do far more than any are aware of. Making sure that children receive a daily hug is not that difficult and can pay big dividends.
Hugs May Lay a Solid Foundation
There is evidence that babies who are given their fair share of hugs may have lasting effects. Studies have shown that plenty of touches early on may help people to deal better with stress when they are older. It seems that it may provide better coping skills as well as helping them in their overall development.
Hugs May Lower Blood Pressure
Many people face problems with blood pressure. Any time they can find something that helps them to improve it, it is likely worth trying. More hugging is fun and easy once people get over their basic timidness about it. Whether they are hugging children or adults, they can have a good experience that is shared with others.
Remember Older People
Too many times, our older citizens get forgotten. Some people deal with them as if they were in a world of their own totally separate from the one in which we live. They can be a tremendous resource for all of us. Their experiences and perspective may give us much to reflect upon. I used to visit an older friend who lived in a retirement home. As I would walk down the hall toward her room, I would see many people sitting in the hall slumped over or simply staring into space. I determined that I would speak to them more often and maybe offer a hand. By doing so, I found that many had a great deal to offer but had become so used to being ignored that they tried to remove themselves from life in order to cope. Older individuals may need a hug as much as children. Make the effort to try it. You may well be pleasantly surprised, and you may feel that you have gained the most.
