The Easiest Vegetables to Grow
By Sara Butler
You may have fleetingly thought of growing your own fresh produce but then remember the fern you bought last year at the market that met an early demise. Don’t sweat it -- not everyone has a green thumb, but everyone can grow their own food! There are some vegetables that are delicious, nutritious, and very easy to grow in your very own vegetable garden. Here are a few of the best vegetables to try growing for yourself.
Why Grow Your Own Food?
Growing your own food can help you to save money, but more importantly, it lets you have control over how your food is grown. If you want to grow it organically, you can! That way you know what you’re serving to your family.
And speaking of family, if you have kids, then growing your own food is a great way to show them exactly how food comes to the table. It gets them interested in what they’re eating and can create an interest in healthy foods that will last them a lifetime.
Carrots
Find a deep pot or a small plot of soil without rocks and deep enough to grow this vegetable. If you leave rocks in the ground, then it can result in crooked carrots -- which are fine to eat, just don’t look great.
Once you plant the carrots you know they’re ready to harvest if their tops peek out of the soil line. Once that happens, pull them up, rinse them off, and enjoy!
Green Beans
There are many different types of beans you can grow, but broad beans will be some of the easiest. You can try your hand at bush beans, but they can get out of hand. Broad beans are simply easier to manage. You can grow a lot of beans in a small space and they freeze really well, so don’t be afraid to go for it!
Lettuce
Can you imagine enjoying a salad fresh from your garden? Lettuce is a very easy green to grow and it just so happens that a lot of different kinds of lettuce fall into the easy-to-grow category. Try your hand at arugula, spinach, head lettuce, and leaf lettuce.
Speaking of spinach, it’s a great addition to any garden since it’s high in iron and easy to grow. Plus, once it has sprouted, you can continually pick the leaves off to use and that will encourage new ones to grow in its place. It’s the plant that keeps on giving!
Growing your own garden can be easy -- just pick the right produce!
