How to End Daytime Sleepiness

By Genevieve Cunningham

Being tired during the day probably feels normal to most people. It seems that once we reach our adult years, being tired is just the way of it. But believe it or not, fatigue doesn’t have to be a way of life. Though it’s normal to feel tired on occasion, it’s not normal to be exhausted every day. But beating daytime fatigue can be a real challenge. If you’re ready to end daytime sleepiness and have more energy than ever before, take a look at these tips.

Get Deeper Sleep at Night

Easier said than done, right? But if you want to end daytime sleepiness, it’s imperative that you get better sleep during the night. How? Start by lowering the temperature in your room. You should also go to bed at the same time every night so that your body can get used to a particular rhythm. Other helpful tips might include turning off the lights and technology, adjusting your mattress and pillow for maximum comfort, and sipping a hot soothing drink before bed.

Eat a Healthier Diet

Sometimes we zap our own energy by eating all the wrong foods. If we eat junk, then that’s ultimately what we’ll feel like. If you want to improve your energy levels, start by improving your diet. Eat more lean meats, more vegetables, and more fruit. Nix as much sugar and processed food as you can. The cleaner your diet, the more natural energy you’ll have, and the better you’ll feel overall.

Wean Off of Caffeine

Caffeine is probably your lifeline, right? But if you’re truly feeling excessive sleepiness during the day, it might be time to cut back. Your body can become addicted and dependent on this stimulant. Over time, it takes more and more to keep you awake and alert, and if you don’t oblige, you’ll feel rundown. Instead of increasing the amount of caffeine that you consume, try cutting back. It will take some time, but eventually your body will get used to the decrease, and it may start to produce its own energy again.

It’s OK if you sometimes feel tired or slightly run down. Life can be tough and definitely tiring. But you don’t have to live with exhaustion. Use these tips to end daytime sleepiness and find that pep in your step once again.
