3 Tips for Your First Group Fitness Class
By Genevieve Cunningham
Getting fit is quite a journey. From learning how to eat to the soreness of lifting weights to the proud moment when the scale drops, it’s an adventure worth going on. But let’s not pretend that there aren’t some scary, or at the very least unknown, things along the way. And perhaps one of the most nerve wracking is your very first group fitness class. All those people and a teacher and eyes watching you … yikes! If you haven’t been to your first class yet, don’t worry. It’s not as bad as it seems. To help you get prepared and make it a success, take a look at these helpful tips.
Be Prepared
Make sure that you have what you need for your first class. This will lower any chance of stress or panic. You’ll need good shoes, workout attire, a towel, a yoga mat (if you’re doing yoga), and a water bottle. It’s possible that you’ll need other items, but you’ll need to read about your particular class to determine what that is. Just make sure that you’re as prepared as you can be, and the class will go more smoothly.
Ask Questions
If you don’t know what to expect, ask questions! Get there early and ask the instructor. Ask patrons who have been there before. There’s no shame in being new. Everyone was in your shoes at one point or another. So don’t be afraid to use your voice to help you navigate the class and its expectations.
Be Friendly
Don’t go to class in a sour mood. It’s a great place to make like-minded friends! Get in a good mood before you go, and talk with those around you. You don’t have to be Suzy Sunshine, but you should have a smile on your face and pleasantries ready to go. If you can’t be nice in class, at least be quiet, and all will be well.
Bonus Tip: Relax!
Don’t forget that workouts should be fun! Relax! It’s time to learn something new and have a little fun at the same time. If it doesn’t go exactly as planned, that’s OK. Be prepared to roll with the punches, and your entire experience will be more enjoyable.
A group fitness class can be a great way to get in shape, make some friends, and challenge your routine. Use these tips to make sure your experience is as good as it can be. If you’re prepared, friendly, and relax a bit, you may find that the class is just what you needed to get your motivation moving.
