How to Live in the Moment Whenever You Want

By Sandy Schroeder

I am the original worry wart. Without even trying, I can dive into the past, or find lots to worry about in the future, but there is an answer to this problem.  Find ways to live in the moment and just enjoy that time.  At first, that idea may seem too simple, and not very effective, as you try too hard to concentrate on the present, but the secret is to pick something you like and give it everything you have. You will know it when you have lift off. If I can do it, I know you can.

Here are a few of the ways I live in the moment.

I settle onto my yoga mat - I have a weekly yoga class that has become my refuge. I look forward to that time to unwind, put my body in touch with my mind, strengthen my muscles and improve my balance. I also let go of everything that has happened in the past week. It turns out the other class members do the same thing. We all reach out to support each other and share the time. As you might imagine, that hour of yoga flies by.

I play with Jeeves - The big orange cat at my house is called Jeeves because he has perfect white paws that look like gloves. Like any good butler, he believes he runs the house. He also loves to play. Whenever he peeks out from the curtains, the game is on with his favorite toys. No matter how busy or tiring the day, time with Jeeves is always perfect.

I putter in the kitchen - I cook the usual stuff, tacos, chili, meatloaf and roast chicken, but I just like being there chopping, shredding and mixing things. Life is much simpler when it’s all about cooking, and you just try to get the flavors right.

I walk to the park - Along the way I may stop to talk to the neighbors, or enjoy the flowers. Each step takes me further away from the commotion of the day, and frees me up for new adventures.

I dig in the garden - I am not a master gardener, but I do enjoy home grown tomatoes and lots of greenery. I also love being outdoors watching the butterflies and hummingbirds and feeling the breeze and the warmth of the sun. Time moves more slowly and makes much more sense when it’s all about growing something.

You may find living in the moment puts you out on your bike, out for a hike, at the bookstore, or in your kitchen baking bread. Just think about the things that make you happy and give yourself permission to do them on a regular basis. Then savor living in the moment.
