How to Decrease Swelling after Exercise
By Sara Butler
Working out any time of the year is challenging, but when it’s summer, outdoor workouts can cause a lot of swelling. Whether you walk, run, or jog, battling the heat to get your workout in can have a few physical consequences. To keep yourself healthy while the temperatures soar, but still able to stick to your workout regimen, here are a few tips that can help.
Use Ice
You don’t have to submerge yourself in a bathtub full of ice or anything, but make sure to add ice into your routine. It doesn’t have to be right after the activity, but at some point in the day when you can rest and relax a little, you should ice your joints. Put a bag of frozen vegetables or ice on your ankles and knees to help reduce swelling in the joints that take a pounding from your workout. Just 20 minutes of ice can make a big difference.
Drink Plenty of Water
The more hydrated you can keep your body, the less chance you will have of swelling. Plus, if you’re well hydrated then your body won’t have to work as hard in the heat. Sip water throughout the entire day and make sure to have a cool glass as soon as you’re done with your workout. If you’re training sessions run long, then take water with you so you can sip as you go.
Don’t Overdo It
If you’re training for a big race, such as a marathon or a triathlon, try not to do too much too fast. You have to give your body the time it needs to build up stamina and strength and get used to the heat outside, so listen to your body. If you push yourself too hard, then you may notice some swelling. Swelling a little may not seem like a big deal at the moment, but chronic swelling can lead to big problems down the road and derail your health and fitness goals, so go easy!
