3 Tips to Manage Your Diabetes
By Virginia Laird
Diabetes is an ever-growing epidemic in the United States. Many believe this is due to the fast-paced, fast food-reliant way of living. While this may be true, it cannot be an excuse to continue down the path. Managing diabetes can be a struggle, but with determination and hard work, it can be done. If you struggle with this disease, there are many things you can do to help remain on a healthy path. A few of these include:
- Limit your sugar consumption
- Stop consuming soda
- Make time to walk daily
Limit Your Sugar Consumption
Health and wellness experts advise that limiting your sugar consumption is one of the many ways to begin managing your diabetes. If you are like me, and have a sweet tooth, the struggle to reduce chocolate (or your favorite indulgence) is all too miserable. However, this is a necessary step in controlling diabetes from taking over your life. This disease can wreak havoc on your life. Some who struggle with this illness lose eyesight, have trouble with circulation, and end up on dialysis when blood sugar levels are constantly out of hand. It is good to know that some who successfully manage such levels with diet and exercise are able to reduce the amount of medication required.
Stop Consuming Soda
If you are one who wants to make changes to your diet to help fight diabetes, you most likely know that regular soda is a no-no. It is full of sugar and the struggle with diabetes is a blood sugar battle. Some take this to mean that diet soda is best. Although it is a much better choice than regular soda, water is the best choice to make. Everyone should make proper hydration a priority, especially those with diabetes. It is recommended to consume at least half of your body weight in ounces daily to stay properly hydrated.
Make Time to Walk Daily
Exercise plays an imperative role in helping to manage diabetes. It is advised by health and wellness professionals that those who struggle with this disease should make time to exercise daily. Research suggests that as little as a 20-minute walk each day can help manage blood sugar levels. Walking can also help promote weight loss, which can be another way to help manage diabetes in those who are overweight. Now is the right time to begin exercising to help manage your diabetes.
It is never too late to begin focusing on your health and wellness. Decide that today is the day for change and get started now!
