5 Activities Sure to Improve Mental Health
By Brandi Swieter
Mental health struggles can be hard to combat, but people need to find ways to do so. Certain activities are best for people with mental health issues because they allow the mind to be put at ease, de-stress, and unwind after an especially hard day. Try one or all for some true enjoyment.
Laugh With a Baby
Spend time with a baby and you’ll see just how easy it can be to make them laugh. Hearing the sweet sounds of baby giggles is sure to put anyone in a better mood. Play peek-a-boo, gently tickle, or make funny sounds with or to a baby and most people are soon laughing right along with them.
Play With a Pet
Pets tend to make people happy. When a pet owner walks through the door, many dogs are quick to greet them with love. You don’t have to own a pet to play with them, however. Visit a shelter and spend time playing with some of the animals there to get a surge in endorphins or serotonin that will make you feel happy and at ease.
Fly a Kite
Nothing’s better than being outside in nature. Fly a kite like a kid again to experience true joy. The activity not only improves fitness with all the walking and running back and forth trying to keep the kite afloat, but it also helps with mental health. The body and mind will feel more at ease and less stressed when kite flying. Gaze up at the bright blue sky watching your kite soar and see how much better you feel.
Bird Watch
Bird watching is a favorite activity for many. While the act may seem so simple, it can be truly satisfying to simply watch birds fly and not think about anything else for a while. It’s an easy way to unwind after a long day and clear some of the worries out of the mind.
Perform a Random Act of Kindness
Random acts of kindness are bound to inspire and make people feel good. Choosing to perform at least one random act of kindness each day is a great way to enhance mental health. When people are helping others out and doing something nice, they tend to feel happy themselves. Pay for the next person’s meal in line at a fast food place or drop off clothes to a shelter. It’s the little things that count.
Try these activities and more to improve mental health. They help to release oxytocin and enhance feelings of happiness, which promote well-being. De-stress and clear the mind for better mental clarity.
