Bad Vacation Habits for Your Health

By Sara Butler

Vacations are well-deserved. You work hard all year long so you can take some time off to kick back and relax. It’s often a time people treat themselves, but you must be careful when it comes to vacation indulgences. There are dangers in straying too far from your healthy home routines. Here are a few vacation mistakes that may be wreaking your health and fitness goals.

You Choose the Wrong Type of Vacation

Road trips are fun, but they make it difficult to adhere to healthy habits when you’re on them. Think about it: You’re in a car, stationary, all day, taking breaks to stop at gas stations to load up on junk food or stopping at roadside greasy spoons. They’re kind of a disaster for your health and fitness goals. Your diet is toast -- figuratively, not literally.

You Go All-Inclusive

All-inclusive vacations are nice. You pay one price and you don’t have to worry about paying for your food or drinks separately. The trouble is the “all-you-can-eat-and-drink” portion of the vacation, granting you unfettered access to rich foods and sugary drinks. You have to get your money’s worth, right? If you’re in this situation, consider sticking to just three meals per day with a few healthy snacks sprinkled in.

You Don’t Drink Enough Water

Drinking enough water is the cornerstone of good health, but many people leave their refillable water bottle at home when they go on vacation. That makes it easier to forget about drinking enough water during the day, even if you’re hanging out by a large body of water! Don’t forget that if you’re someplace where it’s hot and humid, you’re being active, or even if you’re just lounging by the pool, you lose water that your body needs you to replenish. When you’re on vacation, don’t forget to sip all day!

You Bring Work Along

Vacations are necessary to help you deal with stress and to truly relax. If you bring work along with you, then you’re not going to allow that to happen! Working while on vacation prevents you from being able to fully relax and that can raise the levels of the stress hormone in your body, causing you to eat more. Enjoy time with your friends and loved ones -- leave the work at home!

Get some rest and relaxation on your vacation, but remember to make health a priority too!
