Tips for Healthy Eating

If you’re looking to create a healthier lifestyle, then start simply. One of the easiest ways to jump into healthy living is to make sure you’re eating right. Don’t be intimidated! Here are some easy tips to help you jump on the healthy eating bandwagon.

Eat Breakfast

You often hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. While all meals are important, breakfast does set you up for success for the day. A well-balanced breakfast can help to improve how your mind works, boost your energy, and help you make better food choices all day long. Make sure your breakfast includes a good source of protein, such as eggs, and some healthy fats.

Get Some Color

Each meal you eat should be full of color. Plates with a lot of color on them guarantee you’re getting a variety of nutrients to keep your body functioning at its very best. Plus, eating a variety of a food allows you to experiment and try new things, so view it as an adventure and branch out of your comfort zone for new foods.

Don’t Fear Fat

Fat has been made into a bit of a dietary villain, but there’s no reason for you to fear the fat. On the contrary, certain types of fat are very good for you and needed by your body to stay healthy. Aim for unsaturated fats found in foods such as nuts, seeds, salmon, and avocados.

Moderate Your Portions

One of the most important things you can do to make your eating habits healthy is to pay attention to portions. Large servings can contribute to overindulgence and overeating. Use smaller plates and split entrees at restaurants to help keep tabs on how much you’re actually eating. It may not be a bad idea to measure servings out for a while so you can become comfortable with eyeballing how much of something you’re eating.

Keeps Tabs on Sugar and Salt

Americans eat a lot of salt and sugar, way more than is recommended for a healthy diet. In fact, the National Institutes of Health report that Americans get, on average, 80 grams of sugar per day! The recommended amount is 25 grams, so you can see why this might be a problem.

Reduce obvious sources of sugar and salt in your diet and try to keep your sodium intake around 2,400 milligrams to stay healthy.
