Penalty Boxes Are Not Required to Improve Health
By Tom Herrin
When it comes to games and activities, there are probably more to choose from than most people realize. Even those who are pretty creative often stagnate about choosing some activities that are outside of the norm. It is not on purpose, but most people rely on the same old things to fall back on. This does not have to be the case. For those looking for a little activity that falls outside the usual, hockey may be a good choice. And for more information, all hockey is not played on ice. Many people enjoy field hockey or gym hockey. It can be a really good change of pace from the same old activities that seem to show up on most lists.
It May Increase Muscle Strength
With the amount of running and moving involved in playing the game, it is a natural for building muscles. It can provide an overall workout that will develop the core. Anytime people have to move while performing another function, there will be some pretty good opportunities to work a variety of muscles. Moving a stick as a person runs or jogs can do a pretty good job of such development.
It May Improve Breathing Efficiency
When people get out of breath, it can place a strain on the body. When they participate in an activity in which they do some running combined with walking, they will get out of breath but improve the ability of their circulatory system to provide oxygen to the necessary parts. As breathing improves, so does overall function of many parts of the body. This means that more oxygen is supplied to the cells as more waste is removed from them. It can be a real win.
It May Improve Communication
Most people are not aware of their own deficiencies when it comes to communication. Whether it is verbal or nonverbal, it is critical in many of the things we do. In a game such as hockey, it is important to be able to communicate what you are doing in relation to others. This will naturally improve as you play more. I have played the game a few times and loved it. It is one of those games that is highly contagious. Once someone sees others playing, they will likely have an almost instant interest. Try it with your group, and see how it goes.
