Healthy Habits for Back-to-School Life
By Virginia Laird
As the start of school comes creeping into view, it may be wise to begin considering the many things that need to change to make the back-to-school routine a pleasant one. Health and wellness experts advise that providing a routine before going back can help the body adjust to the schedule it will need to keep throughout the year. These same professionals have offered a few habits to consider making part of your routine, including:
- Getting enough sleep is key
- Make breakfast a habit
- Get some exercise daily
Getting Enough Sleep is Key
Getting plenty of sleep throughout the school year is the key to having success. Research suggests that where there is a lack of sleep there can also be a lack of focus and drive. Health and wellness experts advise that the average adult should get at least six hours of sleep each night. However, the sleep required for children is much more than that. The younger children can require as much as 12 hours of sleep each night. Check the recommendations from the sleep foundation here to see how many hours of sleep your child needs.
Make Breakfast a Habit
Although your children may not want to wake up early enough each day during the school year to have time to eat breakfast, it is vital to do so. Health and wellness experts advise that eating breakfast can help stimulate brain function, focus, and help stablaize blood sugar that can help the body function throughout the day. For those who struggle to eat breakfast, it is necessary to check out a host of breakfast replacements. Some of these include breakfast shakes, meal replacement bars, and a variety of quick cooking recipes which can make your life better, and adding breakfast to it is simple.
Get Some Exercise Daily
Getting exercise can help you be more successful in school. Research suggests that sitting through seven hours of school can build tension in the body, which can also create anxiety as well as a lack of ability to focus. Making sure that you get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day can help release such tension and stimulate the mind. For those who would like to get more exercise than what they get at school, a brisk walk around the neighborhood after getting home from school can help release tension and get the child focused and ready to do homework.
Now is the time to begin getting your children ready to get back in the swing of school routine. Good luck and may your children have a great school year!
