Benefits of Biking on a Hot Summer Day

By Brandi Swieter

Countless people wait until a hot summer day to go for a bike ride. They want to enjoy the nice weather and fresh air, even if it may be a bit too hot for their liking. Typically, a breeze is still felt even on a hot day. As the bike glides down the street, the rider feels air on their face that allows them to keep cool. Biking on a hot day, as long as it’s done safely, can bring many benefits. Cyclists just need to remember to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks to make the most of their exercise.

Mental Clarity

Any form of exercise can bring mental clarity, but people often say this of a bike ride in particular. Cycling down the street and on a nice day with the wind blowing through the hair can bring a sense of calm, relief, and satisfaction. It really can provide some mental clarity as people allow all of their worries to float away while continuing to focus on their bike riding skills instead.

Aerobic Exercise

Cycling may seem easy, but it can be strenuous if people are using it for exercise. Riding a bike is a form of aerobic exercise that gets the heart pumping and oxygen flowing. This promotes cardiovascular health and improves blood flow to the heart. It also burns a ton of calories, making it an overall ideal workout.

Building Muscle

Many muscle groups get worked during a bike ride. Those who cycle understand just how hard the activity can be. It takes a great deal of effort to pedal the bike and get it to continue moving mile after mile. Hills and inclines are especially difficult to manage, requiring strong leg muscles. The calves, quads, hip abductors, thighs, and glutes each play their part.

Increasing Bone Density

Pulling on muscles also pulls on the bones. This can increase bone density and improve bone strength tremendously. Motions such as pedaling are excellent examples of this happening. The feet and calves have to work especially hard to push the pedals forward. The bones in these areas get pushed and pulled as well with each movement, making them stronger.

Bike riding is a favorite pastime for many. Even on a hot summer’s day, the feeling of being on a bike and gliding down the street doesn’t match anything else. It’s a great adventure for adults and children alike, and brings many health benefits for the mind and body. Anyone who experiences discomfort during or after a ride should stop into The Joint Chiropractic to see what the problem could be.
