No Matter How You Use It, Garlic May Improve Health

By Tom Herrin

Stereotypes and personal biases tend to affect most people whether they are aware of it or not.  Even those who believe they are extremely open-minded may find themselves carrying an unconscious prejudice about simple things like foods or spices.  In some cases, this may actually prevent them from seeking the best available things to help improve or protect their health. Garlic is one of those things that may be the subject of someone’s preconceived notions.  It has a reputation for its odor, or at least the way it impacts some people. This can be discounted because there are some odorless supplements that are on the market that make the smell irrelevent. It is one herb that may do some super things for health.

It May Help Manage Blood Pressure

Many people have consumed garlic for years because they believed in its usefulness.  In one study, people with high blood pressure, and taking medication for it with poor results, had significant reductions in blood pressure when they took 1 gram of garlic per day.  It seems that the polysulphides in garlic help increase the elasticity of the blood vessels, which helps them expand under stress.

It May Lower Levels of Bad Cholesterol

With the number of people who deal with cholesterol problems today, many are looking for some way to manage it more effectively.  While garlic seems to have no effect on HDL or triglycerides, it has been shown to reduce LDL (the bad cholesterol) as much as 10 to 15 percent in people who use it consistently.  It is one of the most common ways people have tried for dealing with blood pressure issues in places all over the world.

It May Limit Eczema

While you are looking at some of those different kinds of benefits for using garlic, add treating eczema to that list.  Apparently it is fairly successful in reducing the number and/or severity of cases of this frustrating problem. It may be due to some of its ability to boost the immune system.  For those who still don’t have enough reason to try it, it really does add a unique flavor to foods. We use it in all kinds of things from breads to soups to tacos to meatloafs and then some.  Give it a try, and see what it may do for your health. It may be an easy and inexpensive way to make some small improvements.
