Your Spine Needs Water
By Sara Butler
Without water, humans wouldn’t get very far. Water is incredibly important to almost every aspect of our lives -- including health. In fact, if spinal health is a priority in your life, then water needs to be as well. Here are a few of the reasons why the chiropractors at The Joint feel water is so important to the health of your spine.
About Your Spine
To understand why water is so important, you should understand how your spine functions. Your spine is comprised of bones called vertebrae. Between each of these bones is a disc that works as a kind of cushion to the bones in your spine. The discs work to absorb shock and keep your spine flexible. If the disc isn’t hydrated enough, then it can’t work as it should. That’s why a healthy spine begins with healthy hydration.
The Benefits
Staying well hydrated has many benefits for your spine. It’s important to remember that from the moment you get out of bed in the morning, pressure is being placed on your spine. That burden is taken on in large part by the discs in your spine. If these discs don’t have enough water to function properly, then you may experience limited mobility, increased risk of injury, and/or pain.
Even low levels of dehydration can cause problems in the way your body functions, especially if it’s prolonged. That’s why it’s so important to drink water constantly and consistently throughout the day to ensure you’re always adequately hydrated.
What You Can Do
Caring for your spine with the help of a chiropractor at The Joint is a great way to make a healthy spine a focus in your life. Chiropractors can help you determine if you’re drinking enough water and employ strategies to help you drink more if you need to.
Don’t forget that drinking glasses of water isn’t the only way to hydrate. Often, water in the foods you eat can help to contribute to your overall water consumption. Herbal teas, fruit, and soups can work to keep you hydrated. Just beware of the amount of caffeine you have each day since that can actually dehydrate you.
If you have questions about staying adequately hydrated, don’t hesitate to ask the chiropractors at The Joint what you can do to help yourself stay healthy and get enough water per day!
