The Most Addictive Foods in the World
By Sara Butler
For some people, specific foods can make the brain’s reward center light up like fireworks on a national holiday. The National Institute on Drug Addiction has found that addiction to some foods can be a real thing for people. Here are a few foods that some people truly struggle resisting. Are you addicted to one of them?
Chocolate
Of course, you know that chocolate is on the list! This indulgent sweet treat is craved by people all over the world. In fact, the cravings chocolate causes and the pleasure experienced while eating has been found to be similar to the feeling people have when taking drugs. Though it’s certainly a better choice than hard drugs, it’s not great for your waistline. A single chocolate bar contains over 200 calories and 13 grams of fat.
Potato Chips
When it comes to potato chips, it’s truly difficult to have just one. They’re so lacking in nutrients and density that they don’t help you achieve a feeling of satiety when eating, which is why it’s very easy to overeat potato chips. Just keep in mind that one serving of chips, which is about 30 chips, has over 300 calories and 20 grams of fat.
Cookies
A study from Connecticut College found that in the laboratory, rats became as addicted to cookies as they became to cocaine. Of course, more research needs to be done on sugar as an addictive drug, but nutritionally, cookies aren’t doing you any favors. One serving of chocolate chip cookies has 200 calories and 10 grams of fat.
Soda
People sure do love soda. In fact, the average American consumes about 40 gallons of soda per year. Soda consumption has been linked to high blood pressure, cancer, and obesity -- and it’s terrible for your teeth. Your best bet is to forget the soda and reach for water instead. Jazz it up with some fresh fruit or herbs.
Cake
You may not be able to have your cake and eat it too -- not if you want to maintain good health. Cake contains a lot of processed fats and sugars, packing in over 500 calories per slice and 22 grams of fat. So, maybe just save it for really special occasions.
Remember, what you eat has a big impact on your overall health and wellness. Don't let these foods take the place of more nutritious foods in your diet.
