How to Keep the Back Safe from School-Related Pain

By Brandi Swieter

Throughout the school year, students, teachers, and support staff sometimes struggle through the days. Back pain is very possible due to the activities involved and the extended time spent sitting or standing in the same position. With some tips and tricks, anyone in a school building can avoid school-related pain and keep their bodies feeling well.

Students

Students have to carry backpacks to hold their textbooks, papers, lunch boxes, and other supplies. Carrying these bags low on the body as they hang from the shoulders can cause serious harm. It’s important that students use the adjustable straps to keep their backpacks higher up and close to their bodies. This prevents sagging that tugs on the shoulders and causes pain.

Another thing students can do is stretch. When they are sitting, before they come to class, and after they leave for the day, they should stretch out their muscles so they remain flexible and free from injury. Failing to stretch and then sitting for an hour at a time in an uncomfortable desk can lead to severe pain. It may even be difficult to get up and out of the desk when the time comes.

Teachers and Support Staff

Teachers often have to stand up in front of their class for most of the duration. They do this several times a day for close to an hour each time. Even just a few minutes standing in one position can place stress on the body, so finding ways to take some of the pressure off could be a huge help. Wearing appropriate shoes with shock absorbency and comfortable insoles is best. Teachers should avoid flats or high heels so they do not find themselves feeling pain in their feet, which leads to discomfort in the legs and an ache in the back. Shifting from one foot to the other can also be a huge help.

Much of the support staff at a school find themselves traveling from one location to another. They go where they’re needed. They may also stand for a good amount of the day, walking to and from each place they need to go and tackling tasks on their feet once they get there. Comfortable shoes are necessary for these school employees as well.

School-related pain can be avoided if people know some tips and tricks. No students, teachers, or support staff should end their days feeling pained. To make sitting or standing as comfortable as possible is the best solution for avoiding back pain and keeping the day about education.
