Keep the Flu Away From Your Family with These Tips
By Virginia Laird
As fall approaches, there are many reasons to get excited. For some, it is the change in weather, while others love the festivals and fairs which accompany this time of year. Experts suggest that, when exposing yourself to large crowds, it is best to remember it is also flu season and it is never too early to begin thinking about how to avoid it. While there is plenty of research suggesting the flu shot can be beneficial in preventing the flu, still it is not a sure way to escape it. Although there are many things you can do to try to keep it away from your family, these experts suggest that there are no sure ways to completely avoid this virus. Still, these professionals stress the importance of adding a few habits to your life, including:
- Stay at home when you are ill
- Make sure to wash your hands often
- Make bedtime mandatory for everyone in the house
Stay at Home When You Are Ill
Although it can be tempting to go to work (or school) when you are just slightly ill, it is not the best choice to make. Research suggests that you are more vulnerable to catching additional illnesses when you get out and about while you are ill. Another reason to stay home when you are sick is that you could be sharing germs with others. Rather than passing your illness to others at work, it is best to give yourself a few days to rest and recover.
Make Sure to Wash Your Hands Often
Research suggests that washing your hands is another great way to help avoid getting ill this time of year. It is advised that you should wash your hands before and after handling food, as well as after coming in contact with others, not to mention after making a trip to the restroom. Frequent hand washing is a great way to keep germs away and your family well.
Make Bedtime Mandatory for Everyone in the House
Sleep is a vital part of staying healthy. Research suggests when there is a lack of sleep, the immune system can be compromised. Experts suggest the average adult should get a minimum of at least six hours of sleep each night. Children require much more than this. Many health and wellness professionals suggest that giving everyone in the house a bedtime (and enforcing it) can ensure plenty of sleep for all.
Now is the time to begin these habits to help keep your family well throughout flu season.
