Why It's OK to Have a Beer on National Drink Beer Day

By Brandi Swieter

National Drink Beer Day comes around every September on the 28th of the month. Though alcohol isn’t typically touted as a healthy option that people should be consuming, having a drink or two to celebrate this day, as well as any other time of the year, isn’t all that bad. It’s OK to have a beer once in a while as long as people follow some rules when drinking the popular beverage.

Beer May Contain Antioxidants

Due to the ingredients it takes to make beer, including hops, certain types of beer contain more antioxidants than others. These antioxidants are used within the body to fight off infection and remain well. Of course, that doesn’t mean people should consume as much beer as they want. It is still a high caloric drink and contains carbohydrates. With the power of antioxidants behind it, though, beer in moderation may be more beneficial than one would think.

Beer Can Boost Bone Health

Beer contains dietary silicon. This substance is necessary for the bones to grow and develop. Studies have found that those who consume small amounts of beer regularly are less likely to develop certain bone diseases, such as osteoporosis. They are less likely to experience hip fractures as they age.

Beer Reduces Stress

Individuals who feel stressed can benefit from a drink of beer. Drinking can help to reduce stress as long as people consume small amounts. Over-drinking can lead to overwhelming feelings that can exacerbate feelings of tension and heighten worries. Stick with just one drink and some stressful feelings can be lessened.

Beer Contains Nutrients

Though not all beer is made the same, there are many made with additional nutrients and vitamins that make it worthwhile to drink. Abita Purple Haze, for example, is made with fresh raspberry puree and wheat. New Belgium Sunshine Wheat is another healthier choice. Look at the nutrition label to find a choice with plenty to offer.

Don’t go overboard with drinking, but a beer or two per day, depending on a person’s weight, could be what the doctor ordered. Beer does have some health benefits to it that people can take advantage of if they desire -- with the understanding that there are negative elements as well. On National Beer Day, bottom’s up!
