3 Ways to Relax and Lower Stress

By Genevieve Cunningham

Stress is a serious problem in our world today. It’s so prevalent, you’ll probably never meet an adult who doesn’t suffer from some degree of regular stress. And it’s growing so much that it’s even trickling down into the lives of teenagers and children. Unfortunately, stress hurts more than our current thought process and emotions. Too much stress can seriously harm our physical health. But what can we do about it? Since it’s unlikely to be completely eliminated, one of the best approaches that we can take is to simply manage it … one day at a time. If you need a little help with relaxation and stress relief, take a look at these three methods that just might work.

Take a Hot Shower

Heat can help relax the muscles and release tension in the body. It's a great way to unwind after a long day. If you have a hot tub or sauna available, this is one of the best ways to relax. But for most people, a simple hot shower will do the trick. Let the hot water roll down your muscles, take your time, and mentally unwind as the shower progresses. When it's time to get out, you'll likely feel better both physically and mentally for a more relaxing night.

Get Outdoors

Nature is a natural stress reliever. After work, change your clothes and head outside for a walk or a little sunbathing or whatever sounds soothing. There's something about the fresh air and natural light that helps to wind down our brains. You may notice a physical release of stress -- such as tension release in the shoulders -- and a mental release of stress as well -- such as a sigh. Even if all you can spare is a few minutes, getting outside is worth the effort.

Turn on Music

Music has a way of reaching the deepest parts of our brains. If you choose slower paced, gentle music, it can physically lower blood pressure, release tight spots in the body, and even help us slow the pace of our breathing. Use music as an easy way to lower stress at night as well as in the morning so that you can feel more calm and collected on a daily basis.

Stress might seem like an everyday issue -- and it is -- but it’s also serious. It can affect everything about your health and life. It’s so important to get stress under control, or at the very least, learn how to manage it. Use these simple methods to relax every night, lower stress, and potentially improve your health in a big way from here on out.
