How to Exercise for Your Body
By Genevieve Cunningham
Exercise is anything but one size fits all. When we’re looking for a way to work out, we often search the internet or check for a list of classes at our local gym. And both of these are great ideas! But how do we know what to choose? Which exercise program is right for us? If you’re ready to find an exercise program that is right for your specific body, take a look at these tips to help you figure it out.
Set Specific Goals
In order to figure out which exercise program is best for you, you have to understand your own long-term goals. Why do you want to exercise? Are you trying to gain energy? Lose weight? Build muscle? Do you want to be a particular size or weight? Once you determine your own goals, you can determine which kind of workout will best help you get there.
Listen to Your Body’s Cues
Your body communicates with you on a constant basis. When it’s in pain, it’s trying to tell us something. When we feel exhausted, our bodies are asking for more rest. When we’re sick, our bodies are once again giving us valuable information. Our job is to learn how to listen. When you’re trying to pick a workout program, listen to how your body responds. Does it feel good? Does it hurt? Do you feel challenged? Do you feel overworked? The simple act of listening to your body might be all it takes to find the perfect workout for you.
Appeal to Your Interests
Too many people jump into a workout that they don’t even like. They think that in order to lose weight, they have to suffer. They have to run even though they don’t like it. They have to lift weights even though they’re not ready. Why do we feel this way? If you don’t like it, don’t do it! Do something that you enjoy. If you like to run, do it. If you like to swim, find a pool. Appealing to your own interests is one of the most underrated ways to find a workout you like. But choosing an activity that you enjoy is one of the best ways to ensure your fitness program sticks and works.
Exercise is so good for us, and it definitely needs to be a part of everyone’s life. But exercise isn’t and shouldn’t be the same for everyone. Use these tips to find something that works for you. With a little willingness to try something new and an open mind, you may be able to find the perfect workout to keep you interested, healthy, and moving toward better health for the rest of your life.
