Enjoy the Fall TV Binge in a Healthier Way
By Brandi Swieter
The fall season means the start of many TV shows. Bingeing often isn’t the greatest for health, as people often spend hours slumped on their couch in front of the television, reaching for unhealthy snacks. With a few changes, people can enjoy the fall TV binge in a healthier way and still get to keep up with their favorite shows.
Bring One Portion of Healthy Food to the Couch
Lots of people binge eat as they binge-watch. People need to either make sure to eat before they sit down to watch their favorite shows, or they should bring just one portion size of something healthy to the couch with them. Having a smaller amount of food available will ensure you’re not overeating while watching TV. Frozen grapes, diced watermelon, veggies with hummus, and black bean chips are some excellent choices.
Stretch During Commercials
It isn’t OK to sit and watch an hour-long show without ever getting up for a break. Remaining sedentary like this is bad for the back and body. Instead, anyone sitting to watch a show should at least get up during the commercials and take a stretch break. It will keep the body flexible and well during the duration.
Workout While You Watch
Rather than sitting for the entire show, people can make the activity healthy by working out during it. Individuals can set up a treadmill, stair stepper, stationary bike, or other piece of workout equipment in front of the TV. This allows people to exercise and remain fit while still getting to watch the shows they enjoy.
Stay Hydrated
A hydrated body is best to have, so always be sure to continue drinking water. Choosing water as a drink while watching shows is also a far better alternative to drinking any other type of beverage. Beer, soda, and wine are some of the more common choices, each of which packs on the pounds if people are drinking them in excess. Water will keep the body hydrated and flexible so it is better prepared to handle the sitting, stretching, or working out that people do while watching TV.
Bingeing TV shows throughout the fall is a common practice in many households. Some nights people spend hours in front of their televisions catching up on their favorites. With some healthy changes to this activity, anyone watching for an extended duration can make it a little more acceptable to do.
