5 Fall Foods to Eat When They're in Season

By Brandi Swieter

A variety of fruits and vegetables come into season in the fall. These choices are some of the healthiest there are, making them excellent additions to the fall menu. Enjoy them all in a variety of ways to reap the benefits.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is the obvious choice of foods to eat in the fall, yet many people prefer their spice lattes or pumpkin pie made with a sugar-filled puree compared to the real thing. Using actual pumpkin, or at least the seeds, provides people with tremendous health benefits. It contains fiber, potassium, and vitamins, all of which is good for the heart and body overall.

Sweet Potato

Sweet potato contains lots of Vitamin A. This vitamin is beneficial for the immune system, helping to keep it healthy and working well. It is also necessary for eye health. People who want to gain nutritional value from what they eat should be sure to add sweet potato to their diet. The purple version contains the most antioxidants, but both are beneficial.

Butternut Squash

Butternut squash contains plenty of vitamins, particularly Vitamin C and Vitamin E. These nutrients are essential for fighting off illness and boosting immunity. This type of squash gets harvested in the fall but lasts for months. That’s how it got its nickname of winter squash. People continue to enjoy it through winter time.

Apple

Apple picking is a fall pastime for many. Choosing your own varieties of apples makes you more likely to use them up than when they’re purchased spur of the moment at the store. There’s plenty of ways to enjoy apples, including dipped in caramel, with peanut butter, as a mini sandwich with almond butter and granola between the slices, and even in a smoothie. Apples are a top food choice due to their abundance of antioxidants. They have healing properties that can prevent illness. After all, an apple a day. ...

Cranberries

Cranberries are commonly seen at the Thanksgiving table. The fruit is deemed a superfood with just 50 calories for a full cup and a slew of health benefits. Consuming cranberries regularly can boost immunity and decrease blood pressure.

Fall food makes a tasty and healthy treat. All of the great options available bring lots of benefits. Enjoy them as often as you like to improve your health and make your taste buds happy.
