3 Tips for a Healthier Winter This Year
By Genevieve Cunningham
It's not winter yet, but the cooler weather will be here before we know it. While there are plenty of good things about the winter -- the holidays, big sweaters, the lack of bugs -- there is one big drawback to the colder months of the year. What is it? Weight gain! The winter tends to bring a few extra pounds, be it from the delicious goodies, the comfort food, or the lack of exercise. No matter the cause, many people are constantly looking for ways to stay healthy through the winter. If you would like to get a jump start on your health for winter, take a look at these tips to try today.
Find an Indoor Movement Activity
It's hard to workout outside in the winter. Sometimes, it's even hard to get ourselves up and go to the gym. If this sounds like you, maybe it's time to get a backup workout. Choose something that you can do in your warm home without ever leaving. Maybe it's an online yoga video. Maybe it's an at-home DVD program. Whatever you choose, just make sure it fits your style and personality. With a backup plan, it's easier to stay moving while still avoiding the cold weather outside.
Eat More Fiber
Many times we gain weight in the winter because we eat in order to quell boredom and stay warm. If this is you, you should consider adding more fiber to your diet. Fiber is a nutrient that expands in the stomach. This means that eating fiber helps you to stay fuller longer, which ultimately leads to consuming less food. Some good ideas for fiber rich foods include oatmeal, apples, and beans and lentils.
Get a Winter Weather Buddy
Friends make a huge difference in our lives. When it comes to staying healthy in the winter, getting a buddy with the same idea can keep us motivated and moving in the right direction. Get a pal and let your intentions be known. When you're having a rough moment, your friend can remind you of your goals. And when your friend is having a rough moment, you can remind them. Ask a friend, a spouse, a co-worker ... anyone who might be willing to go through the challenge with you.
It might seem like a difficult task, but staying healthy through the winter is definitely possible. Use these tips to get you on the right track. With a little planning, some personal goals, and a little self-discipline, you may make it through the winter with better health than ever before.
