Why You Should See Your Friends This Holiday Season
By Genevieve Cunningham
With the holidays upon us, many of us are starting to think about seeing our families. We might be planning big trips or saving for special presents. We might be thinking about cooking our grandmother's favorite food or fixing our uncle's favorite drink. Holiday time is synonymous with family time. But let's not kid ourselves, family time is also stressful time. Can we make it better? Perhaps the best way to make it through the holidays is to make sure that we've planned a little time with our friends. If you're anxious to see your friends over the holidays, take a look at these three reasons why it's smart to make the time.
For Better Mental Health
We love our families, that's for certain. But our families can also stress us out. Seeing our friends and having that time to relax and unwind may be all we need to keep the stress away and our mental health intact. Meet for coffee or drinks. Go see a movie together. Just get together and talk! Friends make a huge impact on our well-being, so don't feel guilty about making time for them over the holiday season.
For a More Positive Outlook
Friends -- or at least the good ones -- help us see the positive side of things. They might listen to us complain, but then they tell us all of the good things in our lives. They remind us to be grateful. They remind us to be positive. And hopefully, we do the same for them. If you struggle with being positive through the holidays, a meet-up with your friends may be all you need.
To Help With Balance
Friends can help balance out the holidays. We love to see our families, and we love to hear their crazy stories. But we choose our friends. We're involved with many of our friends' stories, and we need them to help balance the stress and chaos that is our families. If you want to maintain a balance in your mental and physical health this year, see your family and friends in equal -- or close to it -- amounts.
Friends are such a wonderful part of our life. We need them. And the holiday season is a great time to see old friends, catch up, and share some new experiences. Call up your old friends and make plans. It might do your mind and body some good and make the holiday experience better than ever.
