Don't Give into Holiday Temptations

By Virginia Laird

The holiday season invites plenty of temptations. While many may only find certain food to be enough to jump ship from their normal routine, some begin to find other unhealthy habits to take part in. Health and wellness experts advise that sticking to a healthy lifestyle during the holidays is the best way to enjoy them. These experts have put together a list of tips which can assist you in staying strong when it comes to holiday temptations. These tips include:

  • Drink plenty of water each day
  • Make sleep a priority throughout the holidays
  • Avoid the dessert table

Drink Plenty of Water Each Day

As you make the rounds of holiday gatherings, you are sure to be confronted with a variety of beverages which are loaded with sugar and calories. While these may be delicious, they can prove to be an issue for your waistline. Health and wellness experts suggest that choosing water is a better way to keep your health on track. Because water is a zero calorie beverage, it can help you avoid consuming too many calories. It is advised that to stay properly hydrated, you consume at least half of your weight in ounces each day.

Make Sleep a Priority Throughout the Holidays

Another temptation during the holiday season is to stay up super late. For some, this may be due to trying to finish the last-minute items on the party checklist, getting some shopping done, or possible putting the finishing touches on the wrapping. No matter what reason you may have for burning the midnight oil, it is better that you make sleep a priority. Experts advise that the average adult should get a minimum of at least 6 hours of sleep each night. Many require much more than this. Make sure you get enough sleep throughout your holiday.

Avoid the Dessert Table

For many, the holiday time is a time to indulge in a variety of desserts that you would normally not even have available. For me, this is chocolate pie. However, others may be waiting for the pumpkin bread, pecan pie, or some other once-a-year dessert to make its appearance. Health and wellness experts suggest that avoiding the dessert table is actually the best way to keep your health on the right path. For those who simply cannot skip the dessert table, experts advise that you choose just one serving of your favorite treat.

The time has come to begin planning how to keep your healthy habits alive while enjoying the tradition and food of the holiday season.
