3 Changes to Make to Your Holiday Buffet

By Virginia Laird

If there is a holiday party in your future, you may likely be trying to identify a way to keep your food selection healthy. Health and wellness experts advise that there are several things you can do to encourage healthy choices while throwing a holiday party that are sure to make everyone happy to attend. A few of their tips include:

  • Add fresh fruit and veggies to your holiday buffet
  • Give baked sweet potatoes a try
  • Just serve water

Add Fresh Fruit and Veggies to Your Holiday Buffet

While attending your calendar full of holiday parties, you are sure to have a host of unhealthy desserts and treats available. Health and wellness experts suggest that adding fresh fruits and vegetables to your holiday buffet will encourage you and your guests to make healthier food choices. Although there will be plenty of space for the unhealthy food as well, offering a few healthy alternatives can be enough for you to choose wisely.

Give Baked Sweet Potatoes a Try

Rather than offering the regular sweet potato casserole, it may be wise to exchange that for baked sweet potatoes. Although the globs of butter, sugar, and marshmallows on top do make for a tasty sweet potato treat, it is also packed with calories. Research suggests that one tablespoon of sweet potato pie can contain as many as 300 calories. Although this may not seem like a ton, it is likely you will put more than one tablespoon serving on your plate at a time. Health and wellness experts suggest that a baked sweet potato can be more healthy than the alternative.

Just Serve Water

Although many think of the holiday parties and can't wait to get their hands on an adult beverage, it is best to serve water. While adult beverages may be a nice break from reality, they are littered with sugar and carbs. This can lead to unwanted weight gain. Water however, is a zero calorie beverage which can help you curb your appetite for the mounds of junk you are sure to encounter at your party. Make sure you have plenty of water available for your guests to encourage a healthy diet while enjoying the festivities of the holidays.

Now grab your favorite ugly holiday sweater and start preparing your party because your friends will be there before you know it.
