How to Turn Your Job Around and Move Ahead
By Sandy Schroeder
At some point we all question what we do. If you are busy and productive, but not totally thrilled with your job, it may be time to change a few things.
Forbes suggests you take a closer look at what is really happening. How, when, and why we do things makes a difference in time spent and ultimate job outcome. Breaking out of our grooves can mean taking new steps.
Consolidate meetings - If you know exactly what everyone is going to say before they do, your meeting may need a new look. Try having key people submit material in advance and inviting guest speakers. Shorten your agenda and create action items as you go.
Clear out routine items - Don't let your time be swallowed up with unimportant details. Delegate everything that you can and focus on key projects.
Reserve your best hours for the big stuff - Focus on the important stuff when you are fresh and full of energy. Everything will go faster and often better.
Keep looking for new talent - Read widely, circulate outside of your field and constantly look for what's coming up next. There are always new ideas out there, but not everyone sees them coming.
Review your daily habits - Eliminate habits that are not helping you move forward. You can always reinstall them if they are needed. Keep the habits that get things done quickly and keep you focused on the work at hand.
Think before you leap - It's tempting to plunge right into the day, but doing an overview and outlining the day may accomplish more. Think about the work and line up everything that is needed for each project.
Sidestep distractions - Only handle time-related emails in the morning. Reserve the rest for later in the day. At the same time, postpone all other online sites to lunch time or the end of the day. You may be amazed at how much more free time is created.
Create a project follow-up list - Posting a tracking list for all of your projects will keep them moving and avoid losing small details that can be overlooked. Pick a time every morning to run down the list to see what is needed.
Start a regular brainstorm session - Some of the best blue sky ideas can turn out to be key suggestions. Encourage everybody to speak up and jump in with their best ideas. Individuals may become much more involved in their job when their ideas are picked up and approved.
Keep looking for the next wave - If these ideas work for you and your group, keep looking for more ways to reinvent your job and yourself.
