Top 5 Foods to Fight Stomach Cancer
By Brandi Swieter
November is Stomach Cancer Awareness Month. The month is typically used as a time to celebrate with family and enjoy all the fattening foods desired. There are better food options that exist that can help to fight stomach cancer and promote overall well-being. These are the items that should be on everyone's grocery list as they head to the store to shop for their holiday celebrations.
Lean Meats
The body needs to be able to heal and repair itself. This process is helped by protein. Eating foods rich in protein is necessary for anyone fighting stomach or another form of cancer. Lean meats make an excellent source and should be added to the daily diet. People can switch it up each day by choosing between options such as fish, turkey, or chicken.
Whole Grains
Whole grains help to keep up energy levels, which can be tough when battling cancer. These foods have lots of fiber. Oatmeal is a great source and often easier to manage than bread for some.
Berries
Berries are extremely high in antioxidants. These should be added to the diet to ensure the body's ability to fight off cancerous cells and toxins. Blueberries are known as a superfood because of their antioxidant powers, but many other berries make excellent choices as well. Raspberries and blackberries can also be added to the shopping list. Individuals can eat their servings of berries plain or add them to a bowl of oatmeal or mixed in with yogurt to get the nutrition.
Broccoli
Broccoli contains a compound with anticancer properties. The sulforaphane within it can reduce cancerous cells and shrink their size. This and other cruciferous vegetables are best to consume if cancer is present. A diet rich in them may even prevent the cancer from developing at all. Other cruciferous vegetables include cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, and cabbage.
Smoothies
It may not exactly be a food, but a smoothie offers lots of nutrition and is easier for some people to get down. Individuals who struggle to eat and feel full fast can try to incorporate their fruits and vegetables into a smoothie instead. Spinach is a great start. Avocado works as a basis for a smoothie as well. Mango, pineapple, and kiwi combined with ginger and lime juice, and of course spinach, is a great immune boosting option.
Cancer is never something to take lightly. Fighting it now can help to prevent early onset and help keep severe symptoms at bay if it ever does develop. Stomach cancer can make it difficult to eat, but eating is imperative to heal the body and improve wellness. Choosing the right foods and eating small portions at a time will be of significant help for those struggling.
